HISTORY OF THE CAMPUS
In 1983 a feasibility study was conducted to evaluate the concept of a National Soccer Hall of Fame and Museum in Oneonta, NY. The conclusion of that study, was that it could be successful. In the late 1980’s a permanent location for the Hall of Fame was selected. That location, being what we now call the Wright National Soccer Campus. The Board of Directors of the Hall of Fame at the time wanted to create more than just a stale museum but a rather museum surrounded by activity. Thus the concept of the Wright National Soccer Campus was born.
The people of Oneonta and surrounding communities embraced the concept. In 1986 local funds were raised and 61.9 acres were purchased from New York State Electric and Gas on the west end of Oneonta. In 1988 construction began first by logging and then site preparation by the New York State Army National Guard. The campus fields, access road and West parking lot were created in 1989 with generous local support.
The National Soccer Hall of Fame and Museum in Oneonta, NY closed it’s doors in the Fall of 2009.
On February 3, 2011 ownership of the 61.9 acre site (including the buildings on the site) were sold from the National Soccer Hall of Fame to the Otsego County Development Corporation (OCDC). Part of the agreement stipulated the OCDC would maintain the playing fields for 5 years. It is the goal of the Oneonta Soccer Club to preserve and utilize the Wright National Soccer Campus in perpetuity.
